Regional Energy Efficiency Centre (REEC) Building

West Bengal Renewable Energy Development Agency (WBREDA) decided to buildup the Regional Energy Efficiency Centre (REEC) at Energy Education Park Complex, Kolkata with the objects to promote and implement Energy Efficiency Programme for developing mass awareness and promoting the object of Energy Efficiency Appliances both in domestic and Industrial Sector in the State. In West Bengal, the electricity consumption ion the domestic sector is about 30% of total electricity consumption. Remarkable increase in purchase of electrical appliances by households has let to the increasing growth in electricity consumption. There has been limited awareness amongst the households on the extend of energy consumption by such appliances and its effect on electricity bill. Rarely, it is known how energy efficiency of these appliances can substantially contribute to the capacity addition of power generation and emission of CO2 which can severely effect the climate condition. In such a scenario, raising awareness on energy efficiency amongst the households become essential.

In this background, WBREDA jointly with the State Designated Agency (SDA) for energy conservation has taken up the programme establishing the Regional Energy Efficiency Centre on home appliances at Energy Education Park, Kolkata. This is also a part of the USAID UCO – III Project. The construction of the building is going on.

Recent Development
  • The power demand in Sagar Island is, at present, met from Solar PV Power of aggregate capacity about 250 kW and from a diesel generator power system of capacity 400 kW. The total number of consumer in Sagar Island is to the tune of 1500 now.

    However, there are a large number of prospective consumers, who are awaiting for electric power.Under such circumstances,WBREDA has decided to set up a Wind-Diesel Hybrid power Plant of capacity 500 kW to cater the need of the Island people. [ more ]
