Solar Passive Architecture

The growing demand of electricity for industrial air-conditioning, pumping and domestic uses and acute shortage of supply coupled with peak load energy deficit in urban areas has posed a serious problem. About 25% of total commercial energy in India is consumed by services like lighting, air-conditioning, room heating and ventilation. The problem may be tackled to a great extent by judicial integration of Solar PV and Solar Thermal Energy System into Energy Efficient Building design, which is known as Solar Passive Architecture Concept. This is basically a climate responsive architecture concept.

WBREDA has constructed its four-storied Administrative Building with Solar Passive Architecture Concept. In addition, the Administrative Building of WBREDA has a 25 kW Grid Interactive Roof Top Solar PV Power Plant. In the building, net-metering concept has been adopted and a MOU has been signed with State Electricity Board in this respect. One 25 kW Roof Top SPV Power Plant is already operating since 1998 at Bidyut Bhavan, Kolkata.

WBREDA has taken up a programme to establish one Eco-friendly Housing Complex at New Town, Kolkata where 25 Nos. of homes are being built up with solar passive and active concept. The integrated solar building are being constructed under this programme. In addition, the sewerage system of the building will be connected with a Community Biogas Plant from where gas will be supplied to a community Center being constructed in the Housing Complex. The land development work and system engineering works are in progress. This will be the first Solar Housing Complex of he country.

Recent Development
  • The power demand in Sagar Island is, at present, met from Solar PV Power of aggregate capacity about 250 kW and from a diesel generator power system of capacity 400 kW. The total number of consumer in Sagar Island is to the tune of 1500 now.

However, there are a large number of prospective consumers, who are awaiting for electric power.Under such circumstances,WBREDA has decided to set up a Wind-Diesel Hybrid power Plant of capacity 500 kW to cater the need of the Island people. [ more ]
