West Bengal Renewable Energy Development Agency, formed in the year 1993, has a mandate to promote Renewable Energy Technologies and create an environment conducive to their commercialization through innovative projects. The Agency, popularly known as WBREDA, has its corporate office at Kolkata, India. The West Bengal Renewable Energy Development Agency (WBREDA) is the State Nodal Agency for implementation of Non – Conventional Energy Programmes in the State of West Bengal.

The State of West Bengal is blessed with abundant sources of Renewable Energy in the form of Solar, Wind, Biomass, Biogas, Hydro, Tidal etc.  This perennial an eternal sources of energy has a vital role in socio-economic development of not only West Bengal but also the country as a whole. Renewable Energy holds the key to the future of energy, food and economic security. All efforts should, therefore, be directed to harness alternate sources of energy to supplement our energy needs for domestic, institutional, commercial and industrial purposes. The New and Renewable Energy Sources is closely linked with Energy Efficiency, Energy Conservation and Climate Change issues like Global Warming etc.

West Bengal Renewable Energy Development Agency (WBREDA) has launched ambitious programme to harness the enormous potential of the renewable sources of energy through development and promotion of efficient and reliable Renewable Energy Technologies. The WBREDA started functioning from the year 1993. WBREDA within a short span has done a pioneering job in promoting and popularising renewable sources of energy.  In fact, the state of West Bengal has been recognized as a model state in the sphere of application of renewable sources of energy in India. The unique approach pursued by WBREDA in implementing rural electrification programme in isolated habitats through Non Conventional Energy Sources on sustainable basis and revenue oriented mode has been duly recognized by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, MNRE, Govt. of India and other International Agencies.

Since inception, WBREDA has implemented a large number of programmes related to Solar Energy, Wind Energy, Mini & Micro Hydel, Bio-energy, etc. Today, West Bengal is one of the leading states in the country in respect of utilisation of Renewable Source of Energy. More than hundred thousand families of West Bengal are now using electricity derived from Sun, Biomass, Biogas, Wind etc. In the rural areas of West Bengal, near about 300 thousand families are using Bio-Energy for cooking purpose. WBREDA has set up Energy Education Park in the country at the city of Kolkata, Siliguri, Durgapur. WBREDA has a Regional Office at Siliguri, North Bengal. In order to sell Renewable Energy Products, WBREDA has set up four Aditya Solar Shops in the following locations: (1) Alipore, Kolkata (2) Narendrapur, South 24 Parganas District (3) Siliguri, Darjeeling District and (4) Durgapur, Burdwan District.

WBREDA helps the State Government, Panchayets, Municipal Bodies, and NGOs on all matters relating to promotion of alternative sources of energy. WBREDA has a group of experts in the field of Renewable Sources of Energy, who are responsible for formulation, design and proper implementation of the projects related to Renewable Sources of Energy. WBREDA has a programme to assist other States in respect of formulating project proposals on Village Electrification through Renewable Energy Sources, setting up of Energy Education Park, Biogas, Students from abroad visit projects of WBREDA in connection with their research activities etc.

Recent Development
  • The power demand in Sagar Island is, at present, met from Solar PV Power of aggregate capacity about 250 kW and from a diesel generator power system of capacity 400 kW. The total number of consumer in Sagar Island is to the tune of 1500 now.

    However, there are a large number of prospective consumers, who are awaiting for electric power.Under such circumstances,WBREDA has decided to set up a Wind-Diesel Hybrid power Plant of capacity 500 kW to cater the need of the Island people. [ more ]
