The WBREDA started functioning from the year 1993. WBREDA within a short span has done a pioneering job in promoting and popularising renewable sources of energy.  In fact, the state of West Bengal has been recognized as a model state in the sphere of application of renewable sources of energy in India. The unique approach pursued by WBREDA in implementing rural electrification programme in isolated habitats through Non Conventional Energy Sources on sustainable basis and revenue oriented mode has been duly recognized by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, MNRE, Govt. of India and other International Agencies.

Since inception, WBREDA has implemented a large number of programmes related to Solar Energy, Wind Energy, Mini & Micro Hydel, Bio-energy, etc. Today, West Bengal is one of the leading states in the country in respect of utilisation of Renewable Source of Energy. More than hundred thousand families of West Bengal are now using electricity derived from Sun, Biomass, Biogas, Wind etc. In the rural areas of West Bengal, near about 300 thousand families are using Bio-Energy for cooking purpose. WBREDA has set up Energy Education Park in the country at the city of Kolkata, Siliguri, Durgapur. WBREDA has a Regional Office at Siliguri, North Bengal.
